Human: so I don't know whether this was originally intention or not, but since moving to ESM for workflow bundling on main, we now have source maps for steps, which we previously didn't. Did we disable them intentionally?

Summary

  • Removes the stale WORKFLOW_VERCEL_ENV === 'production' early return in hasStepSourceMaps() that assumed step error stacks don't contain original TypeScript filenames on Vercel production
  • Since [builders] Switch Vercel Build Output API from CJS to ESM #1562 switched step bundles from CJS to ESM, inline source maps now work correctly on Vercel production — step error stacks contain original .ts filenames (e.g. 99_e2e.ts, helpers.ts)
  • This has been causing all E2E Vercel Prod Tests to fail on main since [builders] Switch Vercel Build Output API from CJS to ESM #1562 was merged (every BOA framework: express, hono, fastify, nitro, nuxt, vite, astro, example)

Root cause

hasStepSourceMaps() returned false for all Vercel production tests, making the e2e tests assert expect(result.stack).not.toContain('99_e2e.ts'). But ESM step bundles with sourcemap: 'inline' now produce stacks with original filenames on production, so the assertion fails.

The PR branch CI for #1562 passed because WORKFLOW_VERCEL_ENV is set to preview on branches (not production), and the preview code path already returned true for non-sveltekit apps.

Test plan

  • E2E Vercel Prod Tests pass on this branch (all BOA frameworks)
  • E2E local tests unaffected (the change only affects the Vercel deployment path)

ESM step bundles (#1562) now preserve inline source maps on Vercel
production, so the production early-return in hasStepSourceMaps()
is stale and causes all E2E Vercel Prod Tests to fail.
